Commercial Auto Review Checklist for Business Owners
Whether your business operates one work truck or a growing fleet, commercial auto coverage works best when the policy reflects what is actually happening on the road. A regular review can help catch changes before they become surprises at claim time.
Keep vehicles and drivers current
Review which vehicles are owned, leased, hired, or regularly used for business and who is permitted to drive them. Adding a vehicle or driver without updating the insurance conversation can create avoidable uncertainty.
- Current vehicle schedule and garaging locations
- Current driver list and job duties
- Typical and maximum driving radius
- Any trailers or permanently attached equipment
Discuss how employees use vehicles
Employees may use company vehicles, rent vehicles while traveling, or use personal vehicles for company errands. Those scenarios are not interchangeable. Hired and non-owned auto exposures are worth discussing when employees use vehicles the business does not own.
Match coverage to the work being performed
Contractors, service businesses, delivery operations, towing companies, and vehicle transporters can all use commercial vehicles in very different ways. Tell your agent what the vehicles carry, whether they tow, where they travel, and whether customer property is ever in the business’s care.
Review liability limits as the business grows
More vehicles, more drivers, larger contracts, and more time on the road can increase the severity of potential losses. Commercial umbrella or excess liability may be worth discussing alongside the underlying auto program.
